Beyond the Indian Act NAN Summit

From May 23-24, 2018, the Summit “determiNATION,” will bring together thinkers and leaders in Ottawa, to create a framework for decolonization. Nishnawbe Aski Nation’s (“NAN”) legal counsel, Julian Falconer, and Falconers LLP law student, Mandi Byrd are in attendance.
On May 23, 2018, Julian facilitated a discussion, along with Ruth Massie and Former Grand Chief of NAN, Wally McKay, called “Dismantling Bureaucracy, The End of Ministerial Responsibility and Re-Thinking Real Accountability”

Starting with an understanding of the principles and mechanisms that underlie the Indigenous-government relationship, participants will develop a concrete, actionable solution for overcoming those barriers and achieving Nation-to-Nation progress. The Summit will be Indigenous-led and will feature a broad range of voices including Indigenous youth, women, leaders, Elders, legal and scholarly experts, and keepers of traditional Indigenous knowledge, working in collaboration with government stakeholders to advance our shared goals.
